Good. This page names every account, every download and every button, in the order you click them. Roughly an hour, most of it waiting for downloads. At the end your book has a home that cannot lose it, and a co-author who can open it.
Gut.

Who sails here
Wer hier segelt
You have a story, or the beginning of one. You know how to watch a video, click an installer and type into a chat box. That is the entry requirement. You do not need an outline, a cast list or an ending — those come out of the work.
Kein Exposé, keine Figurenliste, kein fertiges Ende. Das wächst beim Schreiben.
Nothing on this page requires you to program, and nothing asks you to type commands into a black window. A handful of words below will look technical — repository and commit first among them. Every one of them is in the glossary at the end, and after the first day you will use them the way you use "folder" and "save".
What this costs. One paid Claude plan — Pro is enough. That is the only bill on this whole page: GitHub costs nothing, the apps cost nothing. And if you have no computer to do this on, jump to leg 10 — the phone route needs the same plan and no machine at all.
Was das kostet.

What you are actually building
Was hier eigentlich entsteht
Two things, and it helps to picture them before you install anything.
Zwei Dinge.
A folder that remembers. An ordinary folder on your computer, with one superpower: every time you say "save the state", it takes a snapshot of itself. Weeks later you can call up any snapshot and put everything back the way it was. That superpower is called Git, and the folder with it is called a repository. A free website called GitHub keeps a copy of the snapshots, so a broken laptop costs you nothing.
A co-author who can open that folder. Not the Claude in your browser, which can only talk. The Claude app has a tab called Code: you show it your folder once, and from then on it can read your chapters, write new ones, correct the old ones and take the snapshots for you. You keep talking in normal sentences.
Everything below builds exactly those two things. Nothing else.
Sonst passiert hier nichts.

Detailed steps
Die Etappen im Detail
Why it takes all this: three things have to exist before the writing starts, and once they do, they stay. A co-author you can talk to. A place the book lives that cannot lose it. And a folder on your own machine where those two meet. Everything numbered below is that setup, done once — no programming, and nothing you have to understand in advance. Each leg says what to click, and how you can tell it worked.
Every leg below says in a line what it does and, at the end, why it was worth doing. The detail in between is folded away, so the whole route fits on one screen. Open the leg you are on; the numbers are the order.

Two things happen here: you get an account with Claude, and you get the app that can reach your own files. Half an hour, most of it downloading.

Go to claude.ai and make an account: email address, password, confirm the
mail. Same as any website.
Subscribe to a paid plan: click your name at the bottom of the left-hand column, then Upgrade. Pro is the cheapest one that works (about $20 a month, less if you pay yearly); Max, Team and Enterprise work too. This is the one payment on this page, and it is needed — the free plan cannot open folders on your computer.
Type claude.ai/download into the address bar of your browser — the long
white strip at the top, where web addresses go — and take the download for your system. (The
step-by-step version with pictures is at
code.claude.com/docs/en/desktop.) Everything you download lands in your
Downloads folder (Windows: in the left column of the Explorer; Mac: in the
Finder sidebar).
On a Mac you get a file ending in .dmg. Double-click
it: a window opens showing the Claude icon and an Applications folder. Drag Claude onto
Applications, close the window, and eject the small disc icon that appeared. Then start Claude
from Applications — the first time, macOS asks whether you really want to open an app from the
internet: say Open.
On Windows you get a .exe. Double-click it; there is no
wizard, it installs itself and starts. If a blue box says "Windows protected your PC", that is
normal for anything downloaded: click the small More info, then
Run anyway.

Windows only: also install Git from
git-scm.com/downloads/win — take the big download link at the top. Run it and
click through with the default answers, every single one, except on the last screen: untick
Launch Git Bash. (If a black window opens anyway, just close it. You
will never need it.) Git adds no icon and no window; it is the engine behind the remembering
folder.
On a Mac it is usually already there. If a box appears saying the git command needs the "command line developer tools", click Install and let it finish — that is macOS fetching the same engine, once.
No administrator password? Claude and GitHub Desktop install for you alone and work anyway. For Git, take the Portable version from the same page, unpack it into your Documents folder, and tell Claude where you put it.
Nur unter Windows: installier zusätzlich Git, von
git-scm.com/downloads/win, großer Download-Link ganz oben.
Open the Claude app and sign in with the account from step 1.1. At the top you will see three tabs: Chat, Cowork, Code. Click Code.
Oben stehen drei Reiter: Chat, Cowork, Code. Du brauchst Code.
Did it work? Clicking Code shows a page that wants to know which folder to work in — not an advertisement for a subscription. If it asks you to upgrade, the paid plan has not gone through yet. If it asks you to sign in online, do that and then quit and restart the app. If you see an error with the number 403, sign out and in again.
You do not need to install anything else — no Node.js, no editor, no terminal. If a YouTube video tells you otherwise, it is older than this page.

2GitHub – der Tresor für dein Buch
GitHub is a free website that keeps copies of folders. It is famous among programmers, which is why it looks like a cockpit — ignore that. You will use two screens of it, once.

Go to github.com → Sign up. Email, password, a
username (it may be your pen name — the name itself is public the way any profile is, but what
is inside a private repository is not, and never turns up in a search). Expect a small puzzle to
prove you are human and a code by email. The free plan is the right one.
Then comes the one screen worth slowing down for: two-factor security, which GitHub does not let you skip. Install the authenticator app it suggests on your phone, point it at the square code on screen, type the six digits back in. GitHub then shows you a list of recovery codes — download them and keep them somewhere that is not the phone. They are how you get back in if the phone is ever lost, and they are the only way.
Download GitHub Desktop from desktop.github.com. On a Mac
it asks which chip you have: click the apple menu → About This Mac — if
it says Apple M-something, take the Apple silicon download, otherwise the Intel one. On
Windows take the plain 64-bit one, not the MSI. This is the app with the buttons; it exists so
that nobody has to type Git commands.
Open it and sign in with the account you just made — Windows: File → Options → Accounts; Mac: GitHub Desktop → Settings… → Accounts. A browser window opens for the password; when it asks whether to go back to GitHub Desktop, say yes. It may also ask for a name and an email for your saves — your own are fine.
Lad dir GitHub Desktop von desktop.github.com. Am Mac
wirst du gefragt, welcher Chip drinsteckt: Apfel-Menü → Über diesen Mac;
Did it work? GitHub Desktop greets you with "Let's get started!" and your username is shown in the settings. Nothing else needs to be true yet.

In the Claude app, tab Code, choose Local (that means: on my computer, with my files).
Click Select folder and pick the folder from leg 3 — the path you noted there, ending in your book's name. Confirm.
Two questions may appear the first time. Claude asks "Do you trust the files in this folder?" — it is your own folder, made ten minutes ago: yes. And on a Mac, the system may ask whether Claude may read that folder — say Allow. (If you said no by accident: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Files and Folders, and switch Claude back on.)
Next to the send button there are two dropdowns: the model and the permission mode. Set the permission mode to Manual for the first few days.
In Manual mode Claude stops before every change and shows it to you: the lines being removed, then the lines coming in, with Accept and Reject. Inside your own book folder, Accept is the normal answer — it is a checkpoint, not a warning. Reject anything that wants to touch files outside your folder. Once this feels tedious, switch to Accept edits; nothing is lost either way, as long as you have been saving — that is leg 7, and it has a caveat worth reading.
Type a first sentence to check the connection:
Which files are in this folder right now? Answer in one sentence.
Welche Dateien liegen gerade in diesem Ordner? Antworte in einem Satz. And tomorrow? You do not repeat any of this. Open the Claude app, tab Code — your book folder is in the list of recent ones; click it and you are back inside. What a new session does not have is yesterday's conversation: it starts fresh and reads the folder. That is exactly what the closing note in leg 7 is for.
Did it work? The answer mentions README.md — the file
GitHub Desktop created. (On Windows the folder itself hides the .md at the end, so
there it just says README; on a Mac you usually see the whole name. Same file.) If Claude
answers in general terms without naming a file, it has no access to the folder; repeat 4.1 and
4.2.
After this the app can read and write in one folder and nowhere else, and every change is kept. That boundary is the whole safety of the arrangement.
5Get the kit into the folder
5Das Kit in den Ordner holen
The kit is a folder of ordinary text files that teaches your co-author how this kind of work is done: how decisions get written down, what a book's facts file is, how the voice is described, how a whole manuscript is checked against itself. Nothing runs, nothing installs — it is text, and it is read.

Way A — you have access to the kit repository
Weg A – du hast Zugang zum Kit-Repository
Then one sentence is enough. Paste it into Claude:
Dann reicht ein Satz. Kopier ihn in Claude:
Fetch the folder cap-10-02-01-book-co-authoring from the sp-sol-ai-kit repository and copy it into this repository as kit/. Keep a note of where it came from.
Way B — you can open the kit's page in a browser
Its address is the one you were given, and it looks like
github.com/owner/sp-sol-ai-kit — whoever pointed you at this page can paste you the
exact line. Open it, click the green Code button, then
Download ZIP. That downloads the whole repository as one file into your
Downloads folder; out of it you only need the single folder
cap-10-02-01-book-co-authoring. Then continue with way C from step 1 — unpacking is the
same job whichever way the ZIP reached you.
Way C — you were sent the kit as a ZIP file
Equally fine, and it works offline:
- The file is in your Downloads folder. On Windows do not double-click it — right-click → Extract All… → Extract (a double-click only opens a preview that looks like a folder, and dragging things out of that is what goes wrong). On a Mac the double-click is right.
- Drag that folder into your book folder — the one from leg 3 — and rename it to
kit. Ifkitthen holds nothing but another folder of the same name, you are one level too deep: go in and move that folder's contents up.
- Back in Claude, say: "There is a folder kit/ in this repository now. Read kit/BOOTSTRAP.md."
- Zurück in Claude sagst du: „Es liegt jetzt ein Ordner kit/ in diesem Repository. Lies kit/BOOTSTRAP.md.“
The honest catch. The kit currently lives in a private repository, so ways A and B only work if its owner has added you. If your Claude says it cannot find it, that is not your mistake: ask for access — one line is enough — or ask for the ZIP and take way C. Everything after this point is identical whichever way you came.
Did it work? In your book folder there is now a folder

The five questions, so you know what is coming:
Die fünf Fragen, damit du weißt, was auf dich zukommt:
- What is the book? Two or three sentences. Not a blurb — the version you would say to a friend.
- Who is it for, and what must it never become? The second half matters more than the first.
- Which language is the prose in? The one you dream in. It does not have to be the language you talk to Claude in.
- Roughly how long? "A short one" and "something like a normal novel" are answers.
- Does it touch anything that could hurt someone if it were written as instructions? Weapons, drugs, a real living person. Usually the answer is no, and then it is a ten-second question.
Questions 2, 4 and 5 may be answered with "no idea yet". That gets written down as an open question instead of an answer — which is better than a guess you feel bound by in a month. Questions 1 and 3 are the two you should actually answer, and you already can.
Then Claude works for a minute and reports what it built. In your folder there are now
five things, and it is worth learning their names, because the rest of this page uses them: a page
saying where the project stands (START-HERE), a list of decisions with your first four
in it (decisions), a file of the facts your story has committed to (canon),
a description of the voice with five sliders (voice-profile), and a folder for the
chapters (manuscript) with something already in it.
In deinem Ordner
Read that first scene and say what is wrong with it. Not politely, and not in professional terms — "the mother sounds like a teacher", "too many pretty words", "this bores me" are all perfect. That is the job starting.
Before you close the laptop: do leg 7 first. It takes two minutes and it is the difference between "my book is somewhere on this machine" and "my book cannot be lost". Everything so far lives only in one folder on one computer.
Five answers are enough to start. Everything the book still needs to decide, it can decide while it is being written.

Claude writes real files, but a file is only snapshotted when someone says so. Two ways, and you may use whichever you like:
Claude schreibt echte Dateien.

Just ask. At the end of a work session, say:
Einfach darum bitten. Am Ende einer Arbeitssitzung sagst du:
Save everything with a sentence describing what changed today, and push it to GitHub.
The very first time Claude does this, a GitHub sign-in window may open. Sign in with the same account and confirm — it asks once, then never again.
Or click. Open GitHub Desktop. On the left you see everything that changed. Bottom left, type a short sentence, click Commit to main, then Push origin at the top. Same thing, with buttons. The very first time, that top button says Publish branch instead — same button, it just has not been to GitHub before. If a window asks whether to keep the repository private, say yes.
main, by the way, is just the name of your one and only track — the main copy of the book. You are not choosing anything when you click "Commit to main"; that is simply where your text lives. Side tracks exist (see the glossary), and you can ignore them for months.
The one habit worth having. Save at the end of every session, even a bad one. And ask for the closing note first: "Write one line into START-HERE about where we are and what comes next, then save." With that, tomorrow's session — or next month's — picks up after reading a single page.
And the reason all of this exists: if a day's work goes wrong, you say "put everything back to the last save", and it is back. Nothing you write can be permanently ruined by a bad afternoon.
The one limit of that sentence. "Back to the last save" reaches back to the last save, not to five minutes ago. Whatever was written since the last one is gone with it. That is the whole argument for saving often: every save is a point you are allowed to return to, and a day with four saves has four of them.
Saving is the one habit that makes every other mistake survivable. Nothing else on this page matters if the manuscript can vanish.

Decide out loud. Anything you settle, even in passing ("no, she's older than him"), say it plainly — the kit tells Claude to write it into the decision list with a reason. In three months, "why is this like this?" has an answer.

Mark two passages a day. One you like, one you don't. Claude names which slider each sits on and shows you the same passage at a different setting. That is how the voice is built — not by discussing adjectives.
Ask for the list of changes before the text. After a revision pass: "What did you change, where, and why? The list first, the prose after."
Verlang die Änderungsliste vor dem Text. Nach jedem Überarbeitungslauf: „Was hast du geändert, wo und warum? Erst die Liste, dann die Prosa.“
Have it checked, with quotes. Once a week: "Check the whole manuscript against the facts file and the decisions. Report only what you can quote." You will get things like: chapter four says the dog is grey, chapter nine says brown. That is what a co-author with an unlimited attention span is for.
These four are what separates a book that still holds together at chapter thirty from one that does not.

10If you only have a phone
10Wenn du nur ein Handy hast
It works, and it is no makeshift: much of the book this kit came from was written from a phone. There is no app to install, no Git, and no key to look after. Instead of Claude working on your computer, a session in the cloud fetches your repository, works inside it, and hands the result back.

You need only steps 1.1 and 1.2 (an account and a paid plan — Pro is
enough) and the GitHub account from 2.1. Everything else in legs 1 and 2 — the
desktop app, Git, GitHub Desktop — you skip entirely. Make the repository in the phone browser as in leg 3,
on github.com: + top right →
New repository → name → Private → tick
Add a README file → Create repository. Here the tick
matters: a completely empty repository has nothing for the cloud to fetch.
→ New repository → Name → Private →
holen.
Open claude.ai/code in the phone browser, or the
Code tab in the Claude app. Sign in with the account you pay for. If a
first screen offers you the desktop app, there is a Continue on web at
the bottom.
Bietet dir
die erste Ansicht die Desktop-App an, steht ganz unten
Continue on web.
It asks to be connected to GitHub. Tap Sign in with GitHub, and on GitHub's page Authorize. You land back automatically. If it then offers to install the Claude GitHub App on your repositories, you may tap Skip — that part is only for automatic work on pull requests, and your sessions reach the same repositories either way. (If your book still does not appear in the selector later, install the app after all and pick your repository there.)
On Pro and Max, a working environment called Default is created for you and there is nothing to fill in. (On a company account someone may have to switch this on first — then a line about GitHub access appears instead of the sign-in button.)
Below the input box sits the repository selector. Tap it and pick your book. If the kit
is a repository you can see, add it there as a second one — the selector takes more than one. If
you were given the kit as a ZIP file, attach it to your first message instead and ask for it to
be unpacked into a folder called kit.
Then the same sentence as on the computer, with one addition:
Put the kit into a folder called kit in my book repository, then read kit/BOOTSTRAP.md and follow it, starting with the five questions.
Did it work? You are asked the five questions from leg 6, and above the
conversation a small counter appears, something like +42 −18. That is the diff: how
many lines were added and removed. Tap it and you can read every change.
Tipp ihn an, dann kannst du jede
Änderung nachlesen.
The one real difference to the computer route: a cloud session does not write straight into
your main copy. It works on a side track and shows you the diff. When you are happy, tap
Create PR at the top of the diff view. That opens the request on
github.com: scroll past the list of changes, tap Merge pull
request, then Confirm merge. Your side track is now folded into the
main copy — that is the phone's version of leg 7's saving. Nothing is at risk in the meantime; the
side track sits on GitHub the whole time.
Two things behave differently, and neither hurts prose. A cloud session cannot stop before every single edit to ask you — that mode does not exist there. You get Accept edits, or Plan if you would rather agree the approach first; either way you review afterwards in the diff. And the session only ever sees what is in the repository, never anything else on your phone.
It survives being interrupted. Locking the phone or closing the tab does not stop the session — it keeps working and waits for you. And sessions follow you between devices: start one on the phone at the bus stop, open the same one on the laptop in the evening. Still ask for the closing note and a save at the end of a working day; that habit is what makes next month easy, not what makes tonight safe.
It is a stopgap, and it genuinely works. A book has been written this way before yours.

Every plan has a rolling window of a few hours and a weekly cap. The app warns you before you get there and says when it resets. Nothing is lost: say "save first", then come back later and carry on. If it happens weekly, the larger plan is the answer — but try a month first.
Is my book used to train the model?Wird mein Buch zum Training benutzt?
On the personal plans this is a setting on your own account, and the honest answer is: go and look at it rather than trust a page. Under Settings → Privacy there is a switch for letting your chats be used to improve Claude. As the published policy stands, it is off unless you turn it on. Two exceptions either way: conversations flagged for a safety review, and answers you rate with the thumbs buttons. Company plans and the developer interface are governed separately. Check the switch once, at the beginning — it takes ten seconds and settles the question for good.
Who can see my private repository?Wer kann mein privates Repository sehen?
You, and anyone you explicitly invite. Not search engines, not other users, not people with the link. As with any hosting company, staff can reach it in narrow cases — support you asked for, or a legal obligation. If that is not acceptable for your material, keep the folder on your machine and never push: you keep the privacy and give up the second copy. That is a real trade, and it is yours to make.
Du.
How do I read it as a book, not as files?
Ask for it: "Make one file out of all chapters in order." That always works and takes a minute — you get a single readable file in your folder. If you also want an ePub for the e-reader or a Word document, ask for those too; Claude may need to fetch a small converter first and will say so before it does. Do it once a week either way. Reading your own book on a device that is not the one you write on shows you things the screen hides.
My editor wants Word with track changesMein Lektorat will Word mit Änderungsverfolgung
Export as above. What comes back with comments and tracked changes, you can hand straight to the session: "Here is the edited file. Give me the list of changes first, then we go through them one by one." You decide each one — that is the same loop as always.
My laptop dies. What then?Mein Laptop gibt den Geist auf. Und dann?
Everything you pushed is on GitHub, complete, with every save. On the new machine: install Claude and GitHub Desktop again, then in GitHub Desktop Clone a repository from the Internet…, pick your book, done — you are where you left off. Try it once on purpose, into a second folder, so you have seen it work. That is worth more than believing it.
Alles, was du hochgeladen hast, liegt vollständig bei GitHub, samt jeder einzelnen Sicherung. Auf dem neuen Rechner: Claude und GitHub Desktop wieder installieren, dann in GitHub Desktop auf Clone a repository from the Internet…, dein Buch auswählen, fertig. Du stehst wieder da, wo du aufgehört hast.
I put it down for three monthsIch lasse es drei Monate liegen
Open a new session on the folder and say: "Read START-HERE and the decision list, then tell me where we are and what the next three steps were." You get your own project back in one page. That page exists for exactly this moment, and it is why the closing note is worth the thirty seconds.
Can a human editor join in?Kann ein Mensch mitlesen?
Two ways. Send them an export — right for almost everyone. Or invite them into the

And when the story wants a second chapter, everything is already there: the folder that remembers, the decisions, the facts, the voice — and the only thing that really matters, which is that you decide and your co-author says what it did.
