“I have an idea for a web app, and I have never installed anything but games.”

Good. This page names every account, every download and every button, in the order you click them, and it tells you after each leg how to know it worked. Roughly an hour, most of it waiting for downloads. At the end your idea has a home that cannot lose it, and a co-worker who can open it.

Gut.

Who sails here

Wer hier segelt

You have an idea, or the beginning of one. You can watch a video, click an installer and type into a chat box. That is the entry requirement, and it is lower than it sounds: you do not need to know who exactly would use your app, what they would see, or what should happen when they click. "I don't know yet" is a legitimate answer — it is something the work produces, not a ticket you pay at the door.

What you do not have is a toolbelt: no editor, no terminal, no idea what "deploy" means. That is the half that can be automated. Looking at what comes back and saying whether it matches what you meant is the half that cannot — and that half you already have.

Was dir fehlt, ist der Werkzeuggürtel: kein Editor, kein Terminal, keine Ahnung, was „deploy“ bedeutet. Diese Hälfte lässt sich automatisieren. Anzusehen, was zurückkommt, und zu sagen, ob es dem entspricht, was du gemeint hast: diese Hälfte nicht. Und die hast du längst.

This is the newcomer voyage. There is a sister page for someone writing a book rather than software: same route, same first hour, a co-author at the end instead of a prototype.

What this costs. One paid Claude plan — Pro is enough. That is the only bill on this whole page: GitHub costs nothing, the app costs nothing, and nothing here needs a credit card twice. Everything below assumes a computer you can install software on. Without one, there is a route through the browser at the end of leg 9.

Was das kostet.

What actually gets built

Was hier wirklich entsteht

Two things. It helps to picture them before you install anything.

Zwei Dinge.

A folder that remembers. An ordinary folder on your computer with one superpower: on request it takes a snapshot of itself. Weeks later you can call up any snapshot and have the folder back exactly as it was. The superpower is called Git, a folder that has it is called a repository, and because the snapshots also sit on a free website called GitHub, a dead laptop costs you nothing but the laptop.

A co-worker who can open that folder. Not the Claude in your browser — that one can only talk. The Claude app has a tab called Code. You show it your folder once, and from then on it reads your files, writes new ones, changes old ones, runs what it wrote and takes the snapshots for you. You keep talking in ordinary sentences.

your idea, your words a repository every version kept features, later
Home first, features second — the order that makes everything undoable.

The whole rest of this page builds exactly those two things and then uses them. Nothing else happens here.

Sonst passiert hier nichts.

Detailed steps

Die Etappen im Detail

Why it takes all this: three things have to exist before you can start, and once they do, they stay. Someone to talk to who can do the typing. A place your idea lives that cannot lose it. And a folder on your own machine where those two meet. Everything numbered below is that setup, done once — no programming, and nothing you have to understand in advance. Each leg says what to click, and how you can tell it worked.

Every leg below says in a line what it does and, at the end, why it was worth doing. The detail in between is folded away, so the whole route fits on one screen. Open the leg you are on; the numbers are the order.

1Install Claude — the co-worker

1Claude installieren – den Mitarbeiter

Two things happen here: you get an account with Claude, and you get the app that can reach your own files. Half an hour, most of it downloading.

Show the detailDie Einzelheiten zeigen
1.1

Go to claude.ai and make an account: email, password, click the confirmation mail. Like anywhere else.

1.2

Take a paid plan: click your name at the bottom of the left-hand column, then Upgrade. Pro is the cheapest one that works — about $20 a month, less if you pay yearly; Max, Team and Enterprise work too. This is the one payment on this page, and it has to be: the free plan cannot reach folders on your computer.

1.3

Type claude.ai/download into the address bar of your browser — the long white strip at the top, where web addresses go — and take the download for your system. Everything you download lands in your Downloads folder: on Windows in the left column of the Explorer, on a Mac in the Finder sidebar.

On a Mac you get a file ending in .dmg. Double-click it and a window opens with the Claude icon and an Applications folder side by side. Drag Claude onto the Applications folder, close the window, and eject the small disc icon that appeared. Then start Claude from the Applications folder. The first time, macOS wants to know whether you really mean to open a program from the internet: Open.

On Windows you get an .exe. Double-click, and that is it — there is no wizard, the program installs itself and starts. If a blue box says "Windows protected your PC", that box appears for everything that comes from the internet: click the small More info, then Run anyway.

1.4

Windows only: also install Git, from git-scm.com/downloads/win, the big download link at the top. Run it and click through with the default answers — really all of them — and only on the last screen untick Launch Git Bash. (If a black window opens anyway: close it, you will never need it.) Git adds no icon and opens nothing. It is the engine behind the folder's memory.

On a Mac Git is usually already there. If a box appears saying the git command needs the "command line developer tools", click Install and let it run. macOS is fetching the same engine, once.

1.5

Open the Claude app and sign in with the account from 1.1. Along the top there are three tabs: Chat, Cowork, Code. You want Code.

Oben stehen drei Reiter: Chat, Cowork, Code. Du brauchst Code.

Did it work? After clicking Code you get a view asking which folder to work in. Not an advertisement for a subscription. If you are asked to upgrade, the payment has not gone through yet. If you are asked to sign in online, do that, then quit the app completely and start it again. If an error with the number 403 appears: sign out and in once.

Deliberately NOT on the day-one list: an editor like VS Code. It is free, it is excellent, and you will probably want it in week two or three — the moment you catch yourself wanting to read the files yourself. Installing it today just puts a cockpit in front of you before you know what the levers do. Add tools when you feel their absence, and leg 10 says when that is.

You do not need to install anything else: no Node, no editor, no terminal. If a YouTube video says otherwise, it is older than this page. (Node does come up once, in leg 11, where the voyage hands over to the assistant.)

This is the co-worker. Everything after this is you describing something and someone competent doing the typing.

2GitHub — the safe your idea lives in

2GitHub – der Tresor für deine Idee

GitHub is a free website that keeps copies of folders. It is built by programmers for programmers and looks accordingly like a cockpit — do not let that put you off. You need exactly two pages of it, and those only once.

2.1

Go to github.com and click Sign up. Email, password, username — the username may well be a pen name. It is public, like any profile; what sits inside a private repository is not, and does not turn up in a search engine either. Along the way you prove you are not a robot and type in a code from your inbox. Take the free plan.

Then comes the one screen worth slowing down for: two-factor security. GitHub will not let you past it. Install the app it suggests on your phone, hold it up to the square pattern on screen, type in the six digits it shows you. At the end GitHub puts a list of recovery codes in front of you. Download them and keep them somewhere that is not the phone: once the phone is gone, those codes are the only way back into your account.

2.2

Still on github.com, make the empty home for your idea: + top right → New repository → a name without spaces, for example my-first-app → tick Private → tick Add a README file → Create repository. Leave the two dropdowns underneath on None.

You now have an address that looks like github.com/yourname/my-first-app. Keep the browser tab open, you need that line in ten minutes.

Did it work? Under your profile picture → Your repositories your project appears, with a small grey badge Private next to it. If the badge is missing, the folder is public: open the repository, click Settings, scroll to the bottom and set the visibility to private.

Why an account you will barely visit? Because this is the only step that makes a bad afternoon survivable. Everything after this is undoable, and it is undoable because of GitHub. Ten minutes now, once.

From here on your idea has an address that is not your laptop. Laptops break; this does not.

3Point Claude at a folder, and connect it

3Claude den Ordner zeigen und ihn verbinden

Now the two halves meet: you show Claude the folder on your machine, and you connect that folder to the safe you just made.

Show the detailDie Einzelheiten zeigen
3.1

Make an empty folder for the project, by hand, the way you make any folder. Put it somewhere plain: C:\Users\yourname\Projects\my-first-app on Windows (a folder directly on C:\ needs an administrator), or Projects in your home folder on a Mac. One rule: if the path contains OneDrive or iCloud Drive, pick somewhere else. Those two sync in the background, and in a folder that is meant to remember they cause damage you notice weeks later.

3.2

In the Claude app, tab Code, go to Local. That means nothing more than: on my machine, with my files. Click Select folder, pick the folder from 3.1, confirm.

Two questions may come up the first time. Claude wants to know "Do you trust the files in this folder?" — it is your own folder, empty, made two minutes ago, so yes. And on a Mac the system asks separately whether Claude may look inside: Allow. (If you refused by accident, the switch is under System Settings → Privacy & Security → Files and Folders.)

3.3

Next to the send button sit two dropdowns: one for the model, one for the permission mode. Put the mode on Manual for the first few days.

In Manual mode Claude stops before every change and lays it in front of you: the lines going out on top, the lines coming in underneath, with Accept and Reject. Inside your own project folder, Accept is the normal answer — it is a checkpoint, not a warning. Reject is for anything that wants to touch files outside your folder. Once it feels like a nuisance, switch to Accept edits; nothing is lost either way, as long as you have been saving, and leg 6 is about that.

Verloren geht dabei nichts, solange du gesichert hast; davon handelt Etappe 6.

3.4

Now connect the folder to the repository from 2.2. Paste this, with your own address in place of the example:

What you say — ready to pasteWas du sagst – zum Kopieren
This folder is my project. Connect it to github.com/myname/my-first-app, fetch what is already in there, and then tell me in one sentence what you did.Dieser Ordner ist mein Projekt. Verbinde ihn mit github.com/meinname/meine-erste-app, hol, was dort schon liegt, und sag mir dann in einem Satz, was du getan hast.

A GitHub sign-in window may open while it works. Sign in with the same account and confirm; it asks once and then never again. If Claude reports that it cannot reach GitHub, say "then just prepare the folder locally, I will connect it later" and carry on — the connection is convenience, the remembering already works.

3.5

One sentence to check the connection:

Which files are in this folder right now? Answer in one sentence.Welche Dateien liegen gerade in diesem Ordner? Antworte in einem Satz.
3.6

And tomorrow? None of this again. Open the Claude app, tab Code: your project folder is in the list of recent ones, one click and you are back in. What a new session does not bring with it is yesterday's conversation. It starts from nothing and reads its way into the folder — which is exactly why leg 7 asks you to leave a closing note.

Did it work? The answer names README.md — the file GitHub made when you ticked the box in 2.2. (On Windows the folder hides the .md at the end, so there it is just README; on a Mac you usually see the whole name. Same file.) If Claude answers in general terms without naming a single file, it cannot reach the folder: repeat 3.2.

After this the app can read and write in one folder and nowhere else, and every change is kept. That boundary is the whole safety of the arrangement.

4The kit comes aboard

4Das Kit kommt an Bord

The kit is a folder of ordinary text files that teaches your co-worker how this kind of work is done: how a loose idea becomes a written problem statement, how decisions are recorded, how a plan is kept, how work gets checked. Nothing runs, nothing installs. It is text, and Claude reads it.

Show the detailDie Einzelheiten zeigen

Why before you build anything? Because everything further down this page — the named actions, the help screen, the bell — lives inside what was just learned. An unlearned AI improvises; a learned one navigates.

Way A — you have access to the kit repository

Weg A – du hast Zugang zum Kit-Repository

Then one sentence is enough:

Dann reicht ein Satz:

Learn the sp-sol-ai-kit into this repository, following its bootstrap instructions, and keep a note of where each piece came from.

What happens: your AI fetches the kit from GitHub, copies it into your repository and keeps a record of its provenance — so your project owns its own copy and nothing depends on staying online. From then on, bringing anything else in is the same plain sentence: "learn X."

Way B — you can open the kit's page in a browser

Its address is the one you were given, and it looks like github.com/owner/sp-sol-ai-kit; whoever sent you here can paste you the exact line. Open it, click the green Code button, then Download ZIP. That drops the whole repository as one file into your Downloads folder. From here it is way C, from step 1.

Way C — you were sent the kit as a ZIP file

  1. The file is in your Downloads folder. On Windows do not double-click it; right-click → Extract All… → Extract. (A double-click only shows a preview that looks like a folder, and dragging things out of that is where it goes wrong.) On a Mac the double-click is exactly right.
  3. Drag the unpacked folder into your project folder — the one from 3.1 — and rename it to kit. If kit then holds nothing but another folder of the same name, you are one level too deep: go in and move its contents up.
  5. Back in Claude, say: "There is a folder kit/ in this repository now. Read its bootstrap instructions and follow them."
  6. Zurück in Claude sagst du: „Es liegt jetzt ein Ordner kit/ in diesem Repository. Lies seine Bootstrap-Anleitung und folge ihr.“

An honest catch. The kit and the assistants live in two private repositories, so ways A and B only work once the owner has added you. If your Claude reports that it finds nothing, that is not your mistake: ask for access — one line is enough — or ask for the ZIP and take way C. What comes after this is identical on all three routes.

Did it work? Ask: "What can you do now that you could not do ten minutes ago? Answer in five bullet points." You should get named actions with a purpose each, not a general description of Claude. In your project folder there is now a kit folder, and you may simply look inside — you open it like any folder.

Hat es geklappt? Frag: „Was kannst du jetzt, was du vor zehn Minuten nicht konntest?

The kit is what turns a capable assistant into one that knows how this way of working goes. Without it you get answers; with it you get a method.

5The first hour: analyse, then one screen

5Die erste Stunde: analysieren, dann ein Screen

Resist the urge to say "build my app". Two smaller things first, in this order.

Show the detailDie Einzelheiten zeigen
5.1

Have your idea analysed. Tell it in your own words, as messily as it lives in your head, and then ask for the analysis. In Claude Code that action is written /sp-analyze; other assistants spell it their own way — the action is the thing, not the spelling.

Lass deine Idee analysieren.

Here is my idea, unsorted: … Analyse it: what is the actual problem, what does it cost if nobody solves it, and what is my current guess about the cause? Write the result into the repository and ask me about everything I left open.

What comes back is not a plan and not code. It is your loose description turned into a written problem statement inside your repository, plus questions about the parts you skipped. Answering those questions is the actual work of the first hour, and "no idea yet" is a fine answer — it gets written down as an open question, which is better than a guess you feel bound by in a month.

Then the smallest thing you can look at and judge. Not the app — one screen. "The page where a visitor sees the offers", nothing more. Ask for it as something you can open and click:

Build a single self-contained index.html — no build step, no dependencies — that shows the page where a visitor sees the offers, and open it in my browser.

Then do the most valuable thing a non-developer can do: look at it and say "that's not what I meant" — early, cheaply, in your own words. Not politely and not in technical terms. "Too crowded", "this looks like a form, not a shop", "I don't know where to click" are all perfect. That sentence is the whole method in miniature.

And a reassurance for everything after the first hour: you never memorise magic here. There are no incantations, no secret phrasing that makes things work. Every action you can invoke states its intention, hints at what you should contribute, and says what it works out on its own. You read, you decide, you press. And when you have no idea what you may ask for at all, there is a help screen — /sp-help — listing the available actions and what each is for. Reading it once is the closest thing to a manual you will need.

Before you close the laptop: do leg 6 first. It takes two minutes and it is the difference between "my project is somewhere on this machine" and "my project cannot go missing". Up to here everything exists in exactly one place.

One screen you can look at beats ten you can only imagine. From here the work is a loop: describe, look, say what is wrong.

Claude writes real files. A snapshot of them only happens when somebody asks for one. At the end of a working session, say:

Claude schreibt echte Dateien.

Programmers call the two halves of that commit and push: the snapshot, and carrying it to the safe. You never have to say either word, but you will read them, so now you know. main, while we are at it, is just the name of your one and only track — the main copy of the project. Side tracks exist; you can leave them alone for months.

The one habit worth having. Save at the end of every session, even a bad one. And ask for the closing note first: "Write one line into START-HERE about where we are and what comes next, then save." With that, tomorrow's session — or the one in six months — is back up to speed after a single page of reading.

And this is what the whole thing is for: if a day's work goes wrong, you say "put everything back to the last save", and the state is there again. A bad afternoon cannot destroy anything you made.

The one limit of that sentence. It reaches back to the last save, not to five minutes ago. Whatever was made since goes with it. That is the whole argument for saving often: every save is a point you are allowed to return to, and a day with four saves has four of them.

Saving is the one habit that makes every other mistake survivable. Nothing else on this page matters if the work can vanish.

7Four habits that save you

7Vier Gewohnheiten, die dich retten

Everything into files. What lives only in a conversation is already half lost. Say it plainly: "Write that into the repository — decision, reason, date." In three months, "why is this like this?" has an answer.

Alles in Dateien.

Ask for explanations in your words. "Explain what you just did as if I run a shop, not a server" is a completely legitimate request, and it is how you learn without taking a course.

Verlang Erklärungen in deinen Worten.

Ask for the list of changes before the code. After a revision pass: "What did you change, where, and why? The list first, the work after."

Verlang die Änderungsliste vor dem Code. Nach jedem Überarbeitungslauf: „Was hast du geändert, wo und warum? Erst die Liste, dann die Arbeit.“

Ask what is NOT done. "What is not finished, what did you fake, and what would break first?" An honest answer to that is worth more than any demo. If a tool cannot name its own gaps, that is the answer.

And one more, for the bad afternoon. There will be a moment when you feel lost — too many threads open, no memory of what was agreed. This place keeps a bell for exactly that moment. Ringing it adds no new instructions; it re-minds and re-focuses on what was agreed before the storm. It is the capstone of the principles page, and the thing to reach for when you no longer know where you are.

These four are what separates a project that still makes sense in three months from one that does not.

Say so: "Undo that, and from now on show me the list of changes first." If it was already saved: "Put the file back to the state before the last save." It reaches back to your last save and no further, which is why one saves often.

I hit a usage limit in the middle of somethingMitten in der Arbeit ist das Limit erreicht

Every plan has a rolling window of a few hours and a weekly cap. The app warns you before you get there and says when it starts again. Nothing is lost: say "save first", carry on later. If it happens every week, the larger plan helps — but give the small one a month first.

Is my idea used to train the model?Wird meine Idee zum Training benutzt?

On the personal plans this hangs on a switch in your own account, and the honest answer is: go and look rather than trust a web page. Under Settings → Privacy it says whether your conversations may be used to improve Claude. As the published policy stands, that switch is off unless you turn it on yourself. Two exceptions either way: conversations flagged for a safety review, and answers you rate with the thumbs buttons. Company plans and the developer interface are governed separately. Look once at the start — ten seconds, and the question is settled for good.

Who can see my private repository?Wer kann mein privates Repository sehen?

You. And whoever you explicitly invite. No search engine, no other users, nobody with the link. As with any provider, staff can reach it in narrowly defined cases: support you asked for, or a legal obligation. If that is not enough for your material, keep the folder on your machine and never upload it. Then everything stays with you — and you have no second copy. That is a real trade-off, and you have to make it yourself.

Du.

How do other people try my app?Wie probieren andere meine App aus?

Ask, and have the answer explained before you agree to it: "What is the simplest way to put this online so someone else can open it from their phone? Explain the options, what each costs, and what I am handing over — then let me choose." For a single self-contained page the answer is usually free and takes minutes. Two things to ask about explicitly before you say yes: does it cost anything once more people come, and can I take it down again.

My laptop gives up the ghost. And then?Mein Laptop gibt den Geist auf. Und dann?

Everything you uploaded is at GitHub, complete, with every single save. On the new machine: install Claude again, make an empty folder, point Claude at it and say "fetch github.com/myname/my-first-app into this folder". Done — you are back where you left off. Try that once on purpose, into a second folder. Having seen that it works is worth more than believing it.

Alles, was du hochgeladen hast, liegt vollständig bei GitHub, samt jeder einzelnen Sicherung.

I put it down for three monthsIch lasse es drei Monate liegen

Open a new session on the folder and say: "Read START-HERE and the plan, then tell me where we are and what the next three steps were." You get your own project handed back to you on one page. It exists for exactly this moment; that is why the closing note is worth its thirty seconds.

Do I need to learn to program after all?Muss ich am Ende doch programmieren lernen?

No — but you will pick some of it up, and that is a good thing, not a requirement. What you actually need is the judgement you already have: does this do what I meant. If you ever want to read the files, leg 10 says which tool to add.

Nein.

What if I stop paying? Was, wenn ich nicht mehr zahle?

Your project is unaffected. It sits in an ordinary folder on your machine and as a copy at GitHub, in plain files any program can open. None of it needs Claude or this method to stay readable. You lose the co-worker, not the work.

Deinem Projekt passiert nichts.

And the second project?Und das zweite Projekt?

New folder, new repository, same kit, another first hour. Only legs 3 to 5 again — the accounts and the installs are done for good.

I have no computer I can install onIch habe keinen Rechner, auf dem ich installieren darf

Then there is a route through the browser: claude.ai/code, or the Code tab in the Claude app on your phone. Sign in with GitHub, pick your repository from the selector under the input box, and work there. Two differences worth knowing: a cloud session works on a side track and shows you the changes, which you then merge on GitHub with two taps; and it only ever sees what is in the repository, nothing else of yours. For a single self-contained page that is enough.

If your question is not here, it is a fair question to ask your co-worker directly. It answers those too.

11Where this goes next: the assistant

11Wohin es weitergeht: der Assistent

This is where the voyage hands you over. The first hour happened in a conversation, and conversations are where you think — but the thing you are building wants somewhere to live. That place is the assistant: your idea as a model, and the screens, the storage and the steps produced from it, on your own machine.

Show the detailDie Einzelheiten zeigen
11.1

You keep shaping the same kind of thing by hand. → the assistants. They live in a second place, sp-it-domain, and you bring them in with the same plain sentence: "learn sp-it-domain." An assistant gives your idea a working surface: you describe it once as a model, and the screens, the storage and the steps are produced from that, with worked examples to start from. The kit alone already works; the assistants make it comfortable.

11.2

One practical note, so nothing ambushes you. For the kit itself you install nothing beyond leg 1. The assistants need exactly one thing: Node, version 24 or newer, a single download from nodejs.org — take the button that says LTS. It installs the same way on Windows and on a Mac, click through with the defaults. The database comes with it; there is nothing separate to install, nothing to compile, no build step. Starting an assistant is one command, and Claude can run it for you: start-assistant.ps1 on Windows, ./start-assistant.sh on a Mac or Linux. It creates its own storage file on the first run and opens in your browser.

11.3

When it opens, take the simple view first — the address ends in /zen. It is the same engine and the same stored work as the full surface, with one thing on screen at a time and the machinery out of sight. Stay there until it feels small rather than mysterious; the full view is one click away and will still be there.

Did it work? The browser shows a page with your endeavour's name on it and nothing you have to configure. If it opens on the full surface instead, add /zen to the address.

The conversation is where you decide. The assistant is where what you decided stays, and comes back the next morning without being described again.

Diff — the list of what changed: which lines came, which went. Shown as something like +42 −18.
README.md — a plain text file. The .md only means that headings and bold text may appear in it.
The kit — the folder of text files that teaches your co-worker this way of working.
Action — a named piece of work the kit knows, such as analysing an idea. You say what you want in plain words; the kit maps it onto one of them. /sp-help lists them.
Session — one conversation with your co-worker. It ends eventually, which is why you save.
Deploy — putting your app somewhere other people can open it. Question 4 in leg 9; not something you need in the first week.

You do not need to learn these. You need to recognise them when your co-worker uses one.

Start smaller than an app. Do everything above for one screen — an afternoon, a dozen facts, four decisions — and let the whole loop run over it once: analyse, build, look, say what is wrong, save. You will learn more from that than from any page, this one included.

And when the idea wants its second screen, everything is already there: the folder that remembers, the decisions, the plan, the way of working — and the only thing that really matters stays the same: that you decide, and your co-worker says what it did.
